Best 30 Places to buy Traditional Sweets in Delhi this Diwali

We asked our community members about the most reliable, safe and delicious Mithai and Sweet options from Delhi and got some interesting responses. We have curated this list of 30 Mithaiwalas from Delhi – recommended by fellow Foodiye.

Diwali is not complete without truck loads of Mithai or sweets that are exchanged by families and businesses every year. Moderns times have seen the advent of chocolates & other international goodies making their own space in the gift zone, while companies like Frontier Biscuit Factory have always been popular with their range of Biscuits and Cookies that they sell from their 60 or so stores in town.

That said, the tradition Indian Mithai is always the backbone of festivities and I am sure even god herself would not know how many Tonnes of the same are bought, sold, gifted, exchanged and consumed during these days.

Restaurant Review : The Pint Room, Vasant Vihar

The Pint Room is a nice cozy place with a varied selection of Beers along with delectable food on offer. We attended an exclusive evening hosted by the promoter of the chain – Mr. Pradeep Beer Gidwani – to learn more about beers.

The Pint Room is a nice cozy place surrounded by important looking embassies all around. Besides the embassies, equally important looking banks are scattered across the market this place is located in. The day I was invited, was a rainy one and as usual, Delhi got clogged. This proved to be a blessing in disguise as I could get up close and personal with the promoter of the chain- Mr. Pradeep Beer Gidwani. The others invited were all stuck in traffic so I spent time with one of the top authorities on the knowledge of beers and spirits in the country.

We started with him giving his own career snapshot over a few pints of Heineken. I asked him what he felt about the multitude of microbreweries in Gurugram, so he replied candidly that few of them were actually brewing beer. He says that this is a fad like many others that will come and go.

The others arrived eventually and by around 8 pm we started our beer tasting session. Mr. Gidwani introduced us to various types of beers and then we started with different kinds of beers. We started off with a bit of Foster’s and followed it up with Stella Artois. Mr. Gidwani feels that the latter must be entry point of beer drinking as the former or its prototypes such as Kingfisher are not good quality. He explained that Indian beers or even whiskies contain a lot of sugar molasses as India produces lots of sugarcane. This is much like American beers being dominated by corn by products and East Asian ones having lots of rice. And that is why European beers will always score over due to the balance between malt, hops, barley (usually not always) and water.

Along with these beers, we were served chicken wings cooked apparently with bhoot jolokia which is one of the hottest chili varieties of the world. The wings were well cooked with a dash of coriander on top. The bhoot jolokia was probably eased off as my tongue did not really burn as expected. We also had some meat tacos to go alongside. Next up, Mr. Gidwani served us some Australian craft beers. The first of these was brewed near an orange farm and thus had this distinct citrusy flavour. The next one was milder. Both these beers were smooth and flowed easily. The host also made us try an apple cider. Then we went on to discuss the differences between ales and lagers. We also discussed about the Pilsner variety.

During the beer sessions, we tried to keep the food to a minimum in order to feel the purity of the drinks. Now with the subtleties done, we were brought a meat bonanza pizza. More than the beers, I feel it is pizzas that The Pint Room does really well. A litmus test for evaluating pizzas is often whether they can be folded like any bread and that is what these pizzas were able to. The crust was thin yet crisp. The flavours of the different meats were quite easily distinguishable. This was a clear sign of flavoring not overwhelming the taste of the meat itself. We also ordered a prawn item with lemon and paprika. This item was a slight disappointment. The prawns seemed to be not fresh enough and the flavoring in this case overwhelmed the raw taste.

We ordered two more rounds of Hoegaarden to which The Pint Room added its own unique improvisation. A piece of lemon was added inside the glass on top of the drink. This added a new dimension to conventional Hoegaarden.

Mr. Gidwani was so hospitable that he felt almost disappointed at us having no capacity left to eat or drink anymore. So as a good night drink we had a Dunkel which is a dark German lager. Overall, a great evening spent. I personally learnt a lot about beers from our host, Pradeep Beer Gidwani, accompanied by good food and drink.

What to eat in Bhopal? Best Restaurants in Bhopal

Bhopal is a unique and extremely beautiful city at the heart of India. The city is straddled by two large lakes, one of them built by the legendary Raja Bhoj. Due to several different aspects to have affected the city, the cuisine too has been shaped by the movements. Raja Bhoj is considered the founder but subsequent rulers like the Begums during the Princely State era have added further colour. In recent times, the establishment of the BHEL factory and settlement as well as creation of Bhopal as the state capital has attracted people from all over the country. To add further to this Bhopal boasts of some of the finest educational institutes in the country such as IIFM, MANIT, NLIU and NIFT which have ensured the city has a youthful and vibrant look about it.

Following is a list of 7 of the city’s best restaurants which must not be missed if one is in Bhopal:

Rice Bowl
In spite of Bhopal not boasting of any Chinese / East Asian heritage worth the name, this gem surprises us all. This restaurant tops the charts in all the items prepared here. The lamb is sometimes a bit hard, but every other item is top class. Please try the coriander soup, laksa kai soup, American chopsuey, the prawn items and the Thai curries.

Evening Point
This place serves excellent Mughlai food but also does a smattering of other dishes. The mutton dishes are especially full of flavour. Proportions are extremely generous. The chili chicken especially can literally feed an army.

Chatori Gali
Not strictly speaking a restaurant, instead this is an area in old Bhopal. It is part of the Muslim quarters and serves food typically associated traditionally with this city. The kebabs and paya soup are among the best tasted anywhere. The Bhopal biryani has its own unique flavour distinct to its Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi or Lucknow cousins. Best part however are the bun kebabs which are basically meat preparations stuffed inside sweet buns. The sweet and spicy combination goes together extremely well.

Lake Princess
A relatively unknown restaurant, Lake Princess is part of a hotel located in one of the up-market areas of the town. Ambience and service are amongst the best in a city which otherwise does not care much for such frills. Best items here are the palak paneer and mutton korma.

Ranjeet
More than the food, this restaurant tops the bill due to its sheer location. It gives customers a panoramic view of the beautiful Bada Talab or Bhopal Lake. Live background music is also played, usually comprising of Sufi music. The food is eclectic and quite good. Especially worth trying are the sizzlers which are of genuine quality.

Noor-us-Sabah
One of the two top hotels of Bhopal, this has been created inside a palace. The food is eclectic and different cuisines of food can be ordered. Each item is cooked with finesse. The Hungarian Goulash for example is as good as the gajar ka halwa. Just do not go for the gulab jamun as it has been described as jamun-e-gul and the description can fool some ignorant customers like it did me. The interiors and service are possibly the best in Bhopal.

Shahnama
This restaurant belongs to the most expensive hotel in the city, built inside the erstwhile royal palace. The interiors are equally gorgeous and the place reeks of genuine fine dining. Due to the Nawabi heritage, kebabs and biryanis are famous here. The sweets are also particularly well known. Best part however is the Haleem, which is a must try.

This South Delhi Cafe serves Hookah and Food – All Night Long.

Hookah is served 11 pm to 6 am – which makes it a ideal spot for that post party conversation, with option of taking it under the stars.

Yes, you read it right. For those who are familiar with the party & late night scene of Delhi, are no stranger to Cafe 1440 in Hotel Vikram, a landmark hotel right next to Moolchand Hospital / Flyover / Metro Station in South Delhi. The location is a stones throw away from South Ex, Epicuria, Defense Colony, Chanakya Puri & Hauz Khas for that matter. CP would be a 10 minute Uber ride at that hour of night.

Which makes it an ideal spot for after party chilling, relaxing and enjoying. Plus they have the open air lounging area .. 😉

They had to halt operations due to some issues 2-3 years back, however the 24 hour coffee shop is back with a bang. Though the hotel remains under renovation, which is expected to be completed around Diwali, Cafe 1440 is already working and is welcoming guests.

The cafe serves special late night combos like Butter Chicken Parantha, Dal Makhani Naan, Biryani Raita etc and the best part – it serves as a after party chilling spot with your friends – as you can order a Hookah or Sheesha in your favorite flavors – middle of the night – in open air setting, which in itself is one of its kind luxury in capital city of Delhi. There NO other cafe or restaurant in Delhi which can boast of such facilities, which I would rather call luxuries.

So next time you have that late night craving for a dessert or post party NEED of Butter Chicken, you know where to head to. Hookah is served 11 pm to 6 am – which makes it a ideal spot for that post party conversation, with option of taking it under the stars.

FED Giveaway : Meal vouchers for Followers & Readers – We are giving away 10 vouchers that would cover a meal for 2 at the cafe – Every voucher is worth Rs.2000 – which you can avail for Food and Hookah at the cafe at your convenience.

Just share your email ID in the section you see below and leave a comment telling us about your type of After Party – how you chill, what you do – tell us all. The most liked comment, stands to win a special prize… 😉

Best Restaurants in 10 different cuisines in Gurgaon : Ultimate List

In the ever expanding dining scene of Gurgaon, here are some of the Safest bets when it comes to delicious food from different cuisines.

Gurgaon (Gurugram) is home to a diverse population of people from across India as well as outside. No wonder it has some of the best food options from across the planet. This list attempts to provide Gurgaon foodies a list of top restaurants in each type of cuisine. Only major cuisine groups have been categorized as others would be part of the specialty cuisine list.

Here is the defining list of best restaurant from each genre:

Mughlai / North Indian – Karim’s, Sector 14

One of the iconic brands from Delhi, a number of purists would disagree on putting its name here simply because it is a branch and not the original. But on a personal note, and I have been a regular to the original Karim’s, this one is as good as any. Visitors must try the Mutton Korma over here. Tandoori rotis here are crispier than anywhere else. Other prominent items here include- the sheermaal (a kind of sweet bread), firni (similar to kheer), kebabs and Nihari.

Indian Vegetarian – Bikanervala, Sector 29

This is the ultimate Indian eating-out retail experience. One gets any item under the sun as long as it is vegetarian. The staff is mechanically efficient and it is a wonder how they manage such enormous traffic especially during peak season such as festivals like Diwali, Holi, Dussehra etc. The food is pretty good, the chhole- bhature and papdi- chaat being the best ones. By all means one must try the laddoos here. They ooze freshness.

South Indian – Cocoa Palm, DLF City Centre (MG Road)

Unlike several other places that claim to be the serving authentic South Indian but only do an assortment of dosas and idlis, this place actually does do justice to the term authentic. It serves the usual gravy items, rice based items and even meat preparations which are popular in south India. The appams here are fluffy, thought the parottas are a tad too oily. The Nilgiri Chicken is a concoction of numerous spices wonderfully simmered together. The interestingly named Ishtew (stew) for either vegetables or chicken are extremely wholesome preparations. Be prepared to face lot of chilies if one tries any of the Andhra based items.

Bengali – Oh! Calcutta, Cyber Hub

This place is worth its name especially if one goes for the buffet. The buffet is a delectable spread consisting of various dals, fish preparations, meats, vegetarian items, fries and sweets. The prawn / shrimp fries are especially good. The preparations are cooked in genuine Bengali style but innovations have been made on traditional methods. The buffet keeps changing from day to day but is at its best on weekends.

Chinese – Mainland China, Cyber Hub

This is another place which delivers its very best during the buffet. The starters are lavish and sometimes visitors fill themselves up with these but that must be taken care of to avoid. The main course consists of meat, fish and vegetarian items. Menu keeps changing and the best part is during the weekends. For some reason, the desserts especially the cakes are of top quality. One must undertake this buffet with the sternest of warnings not to eat anything else for the rest of the day.

European / Continental – Drift, Sector 44

This place also does Kashmiri food, but its offerings are certainly European. It has a wine based buffet which is reserved for weekends only. Imported wines (red, white and rose) from Australia, Italy and Argentina have been part of the fare in the past. The cold meats form an excellent start to the meat. The next section comprises the main items which includes a mix of gravy and dry items. The bacon is one their best. There is even a waffle counter. To top it all up are the desserts which includes a vast array of sweets and freshly cut fruits.

Korean Gung the Palace, Sector 29

The bearers at this restaurant are usually surprised at seeing Indians, as this place on most occasions is teeming with expats especially from East Asia. Due to Gurgaon’s substantial expat populations, such places have emerged as sort of refuge for the foreigners. But for few Indians, Gung offers up a great adventure. By all means, one must try the squid, octopus and pork items here which are the very best. The Korean teas are served alongside. The side dishes that are accompaniments with all items themselves are extremely filling. The overall experience is an interesting one, as visitors need to take off their shoes and sit in a particular cabin with sliding doors.

Mexican – Salsa Salsaa!, Sahara Mall (MG Road)

This restaurant is located in a corner of a mall that is typically associated with inexpensive, functional shopping and a seedy nightlife. Yet on this corner one gets absolutely great food. The Mexican items such as Nachos and Burritos are of course wonderful. In addition they prepare unbelievably good sizzlers, with the asparagus stuffed chicken being the best of the lot. Pizzas are also crisp with the base being soft.

Microbrewery Bronx, Sector 29

Among the slew of microbreweries dotting Gurgaon, this one stands out due to several reasons. All three varieties- wheat, dark and premium lager- are well prepared with the first two being especially good. The food is good with quantities being decent. The ambience is also well curated. Another plus point here is the taste in music which is soft and eclectic.

American- TGIF, MGF Metropolitan Mall (MG Road)

Before we start with the superlatives, just a few valid points of caution need to be presented. The prices have gone up astronomically and the music played is so loud that one will never be able to have a meaningful conversation here. The only respite here fortunately is the quality of food which undoubtedly is very good. Please try any of the steaks here as they are the specialties. Also the Cajun cuisine is well made involving seafood. They also have some signature items infused with Jack Daniel’s during the cooking process.

Well these are my recommendations, looking forward to hearing what you Foodiye from Gurgaon have to say about the dining scene out there. Do share the outlets that you would want me to visit.. 🙂
